  • 21 September 2008 Iran’s Women’s Rights Activists Are Being Smeared

Women’s rights activists recently succeeded in stalling a bill to ease polygamy, temporary marriage and male-bias in divorce. But Nayereh Tohidi says a nasty smear campaign and continuous arrest show the adversity they are up against.
    WeNews:
In Iran, the government of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently proposed a bill and, in Orwellian fashion, named it the "Family Protection Law."
If passed it would have threatened the stability, equilibrium, and mental health of families by (...)   Read more

    In Court

We Have Bitter Memories, We Women

    By: Shirin Momeni

    Translated by: Pouran
One year after my divorce, I was offered the opportunity to work abroad. This was the best chance for me to experience life outside the country and with the improved income, I could make up for the past. More importantly this would help provide a brighter future for my daughter. Therefore, to satisfy the judges who deal with family affairs, I left for Tehran, but upon arrival at the administrative office, all my negative memories re-surfaced. The divorce and the proof (...) read more

Finding the Right Key in the Dark

    By: Tara Najdahmadi

    Translated by: Sussan Tahmasebi
I have gotten accustomed to driving fast late at night. With my mouth half open, I speed past the endless lines of yellow lights, on the empty highways. Broken hearts, smog, silence, and red and green lights, are of no significance. Returning home at night; returning from goodbye parties and from airports…from hugs, promises, jokes, useless words, forced smiles, last glances, the utterance of inaudible final sentences, and longing for other realities—a (...) read more

    My Mother

    By: Parastoo Alahyaari

    Translated by: Sussan Tahmasebi
These days she says her prayers out loud. Maybe she is trying to convey to me that she is worried that I may have lost faith. Or maybe she only intends to remind me, remind me, remind…
She tells her daughter that: "you must overcome your fears. If you sit behind the wheel again, a third time, a fourth time, and even if you have an accident, then it will all become normal for you. You will get used to it. Then if you need to take your child to the doctor, (...) read more

There’s a Story behind Each Signature

    By: Taraneh Amir Teymourian

    Translated by: Sussan Tahmasebi
Collecting signatures is a sweet experience, so much so that you never want to let go of the signatures you have collected. Every signature has a story and memory attached to it. This is part of my story about collection of signatures—memories from the day Elnaz, Setareh and I went to collect signatures in the common areas of a large complex.
In general people were very receptive toward ours.

Are You the Same One Million Signatures Campaign?

    By: Nazli Farokhi

    Translation by: Mehdi
I got in the back seat of the Taxi. There was a young man who got on before me. He was talking loudly on the phone….”Yes dear Hamid. These medications have affected my hearing and eyes. Sounds are louder and everything is brighter. Note all the changes I tell you. Take care and good bye.”
After a while a girl got into the Taxi and sat on my other side and we drove off.

    Children Come! Let’s Play Doll!

    By: Nahid Mirhaj

    Translated by: Sussan Tahmasebi
She was twelve, with big sunken and lusterless eyes. Her scrawny face had a yellow hue, and her hands were swollen from too much work. Her body was tiny, and reminded me of trees in Autumn, which had barely survived the summer’s drought.
She would work with her mother in the homes of others, and every evening she would return crooked and limping. The entire length of the street on her way home, she would ring the door bells of her friends’ homes, (...) read more
